There is also the Africa Cup of Nations. Ghana will play DR Congo and Mali face Niger.

  2. 1128:

Mayowa Olubowale on Twitter: "Manchester United fans asking for a CM need to realise Fergie won't sign one because it would slow down/stunt Cleverley's growth."

Avigat Patel on Twitter: "You've got to feel AVB needs to sign a CM (Mountinho) and a CF (Llorente) with Adebayor in ACON/loss of form and Sandro out."

Mike Chang on Twitter: "Hopefully Pochettino can use his European connections and get some world class players on the cheap."

  3. 1127:

Paul Pogba left Manchester United on a free transfer to Juventus and the 19-year-old is making that look like a big loss for the Old Trafford club.

The midfielder scored two stunning goals in a 4-0 win over Udinese in the Serie A on Saturday.

Afterwards, he says: "You have to ask [United coach Sir Alex Ferguson] why he let me go. But I'm really happy where I am. I want to be here, I want to progress here."

  4. 1117:

QPR are after West Brom forward Peter Odemwingie but Baggies boss Steve Clarke has other ideas.

"No-one is going out in January," says Clarke. "We don't need to sell anyone.

"Will he move if there is a silly offer? You don't know our chairman [Jeremy Peace]. No-one is going out. The quicker we get to 1 February the better. No-one is coming in and no-one is going out."

  5. 1109:

Fulham boss Martin Jol dropped left-back John Arne Riise for the defeat by Manchester City.

Jol denies Riise refused to travel but says: "I wasn't happy after the Liverpool game, when (Stewart) Downing scored his first goal since joining Liverpool - John was playing against him, and there was another goal.

"I am trying to do something, maybe to freshen things up or alert John to do more or to do better."

  6. 1100:

There are two top Premier League games today with Chelsea playing Arsenal at Stamford Bridge at 13:30 GMT and Tottenham against Manchester United at 16:00 GMT. Both are going ahead at present.

  7. 1052:

Former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson is reportedly set to become the new technical director of the United Arab Emirates club Al Nasr, after rejecting an offer to join German second division club 1860 Munich.

  8. 1043:

Paul Jones on Twitter: "We do not NEED Kenwyne Jones at Swansea. An expensive and pointless step backwards."

Khoi Nguyen on Twitter: "It'd be nice if you guys didn't publicise Newcastle agreeing any fees just in case Harry Redknapp gets any ideas."

Jonathan Bell on Twitter: "Fulham really need a creative midfielder, lost four midfielders last year, Dembele being the biggest casualty, we need some depth."

  9. 1036:

Nuri Sahin's loan deal at Liverpool did not last long before the Real Madrid midfielder joined former club Borussia Dortmund for the next 18 months.

He came on for the last five minutes of Dortmund's 5-0 win at Werder Bremen on Saturday and says: "It was pure goosebumps.

"To get such a reception was out of the ordinary and I've got to thank those crazy fans, in a positive sense. I just couldn't wait to get on to the field again."

  10. 1030:

Which England player is former West Ham, Newcastle and Norwich manager Glenn Roeder talking about when he tells BBC Radio 5 live: "He has the ability of any of the top European players.

"I've always felt he could play for any of the teams in Spain - Barcelona, Real Madrid.

"He could go to Italy and play for Juventus or either of the Milan giants as well as the Bundesliga and play for Bayern Munich. Very few English players have that amount of ability."

The answer: Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick.

  11. 1023:

Celtic have rejected a bid from Norwich for striker Gary Hooper but should they sell? BBC Scotland's Alasdair Lamont has been debating whether Celtic will be able to hold on to the 24-year-old.

  12. 1013:

Steve Sant on Twitter: "WBA are in need of two or three players. The Xmas and New Year period proved the squad just isn't big enough."

Dan Brown on Twitter: "I'm really worried about the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino, we were starting to get results. What a gamble from chairman."

Dave Newton on Twitter: "After that performance I don't think Liverpool need to buy anyone. Wes Sneijder wouldn't even get in the first XI! Quality."

  13. 1006:

Newcastle agree a deal to sign defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and boss Alan Pardew wants to bring in more players to steer his side away from the relegation zone.

The Magpies are two points from the drop zone after a 2-1 defeat by Reading and they face fellow strugglers Aston Villa on 29 January in their next match.

"We definitely need two or three more players in this group, and hopefully we can get them over the line before we go to Villa," Pardew told BBC Sport.

"I would like to go to Villa stronger than I was today."

  14. 1001:

Ashley Cole may be set to sign a new contract with Chelsea but it does not look like the Blues will be keeping Frank Lampard.

In the Sunday Express, Lampard has been linked with a move to the United States and following David Beckham in joining LA Galaxy.

The Mail on Sunday reports that a move to LA Galaxy could jeopardise the midfielder's England career which could mean Italian side AC Milan are better placed to sign the 34-year-old.

  15. 0950:

Here's some more from former Southampton midfielder Matt Le Tissier on the south coast club's chairman Nicola Cortese sacking Nigel Adkins and replacing him with Mauricio Pochettino.

"I don't know if Nigel was becoming too popular and the chairman didn't like it," Le Tiss tells BBC Radio 5 live's Sportsweek programme. "He does appear to have a bit of an ego problem.

"The strangest thing for me was that he made that decision, which he's entitled to do as he's the chairman, but he brings the new manager in about a minute after he sacked Nigel and then hangs him out to dry at a press conference on his own.

"I thought that was an incredibly cowardly thing to do. Surely he owes it to the fans to explain his decision but he wasn't brave enough to do so."

  16. 0943:

James Stokes on Twitter: "Norwich were frankly embarrassing yesterday. Desperately need someone to hold the ball upfield and give the defence a break."

Ben Lewis on Twitter: "With Sandro out for the season Spurs need a central midfielder and a striker. Sign both and a top four finish is a no brainer. Otherwise..."

Josh Alexander Lines: "Ashley Cole is the signing of the transfer window. Lampard next hopefully and this nightmare of a season might improve."

  17. 0938:

QPR remain bottom of the Premier League and five points adrift of safety after they drew 1-1 with West Ham on Saturday.

The Loftus Road club's new signing Loic Remy scored and manager Harry Redknapp wants to bring in new players to kick on in his side's battle against relegation.

"We do need to make one or two signings in the right positions and let one or two lads go," Redknapp told BBC Sport. "The squad needs improving - we saw that with Remy's goal. We couldn't have scored a goal like that a few weeks ago, with that pace."

  18. 0931:

Southampton chairman Nicola Cortese shocked the Premier League world with the sacking of manager Nigel Adkins and replacing him with Argentine Mauricio Pochettino.

Former Saints playmaker Matt Le Tissier tells BBC 5 live's Sportsweek programme: "It is a bit bizarre, some of the decisions that have been made have been bizarre since the current chairman took over so in a way it wasn't a surprise because I think he's been looking to get rid of him for a little while now.

"The only surprise was the timing of it, when it looked like the team had turned a corner and were getting used to everything about the Premier League and everything is turned upside down again."

  19. 0919:

Stephen Donnelly on Twitter: "As a Man Utd fan, I feel we need a couple of signings to make sure the PL is ours! A CB, CM and a LM and our team would be sorted."

Toby Stone on Twitter: "Arsene Wenger NEEDS to sign a centre back, Dawson, a winger, Nani, and another striker, Bent or Hernandez, to finish in the top four."

Ben Barker on Twitter: "I think that Sunderland need to sign a top quality striker who will score 10-15 goals a season."

  20. 0914:

It may not be a new signing but Chelsea fans will be relieved left-back Ashley Cole has agreed to sign a new contract with the Stamford Bridge outfit.

  21. 0910:

Newcastle's problems continued as they were beaten 2-1 by Reading yesterday. The struggling Tyneside club have not won in six league games and are just two points off the relegation zone.

Magpies boss Alan Pardew says he needs reinforcements and is set to bring in defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa from Montpellier early next week after agreeing a fee believed to be £6.7m for the 23-year-old.
