As news broke of Jon Stewart's replacement at the Daily Show, the name Trevor Noah quickly became the top trending topic on Twitter in the US.

"Trevor who?" was a common reaction to the appointment of the 31-year-old South African comedian.

But while Noah may be a relative nobody in the States, in his homeland he is a well-known TV personality, having hosted his own late night talk show.

Among his two million Twitter followers, his fellow South Africans were some of the quickest to celebrate the news.

Although the Daily Show is ostensibly just a comedy programme, it also has a genuinely significant influence on US politics.

Stewart became an American icon during his 16-year reign as the show's figurehead, and was deemed irreplaceable by many viewers.

As the news sunk in that Noah was the chosen one to follow his legacy, a couple of strong themes emerged on Twitter.

First, unlike Stewart, Noah is black.
